A little about my bodybuilding “journey”

I began my fitness journey as a natural bodybuilder, competing  for 3 years.  I was 45 at my first show.   I am 5′ 0″ about 99 lbs contest, and a maintenance weight of ~115 lbs off-season.  I work at the time as a gym manager  in Brunswick, Georgia – leaving a career in healthcare with the local hospital after nearly 24 years!  I love helping others be proactive in their health and seeing them realize their fitness goals.  I continue to work in health promotion as the office manager for the largest Physical Therapy Group in our area.

My first event in 2007, was the INBF Iron Eagle. I placed 2nd, followed a few weeks later by the OCB Core Nutritionals Natural, winning the overall and my IFPA Pro Card.

In 2008, I entered and won the Women’s Masters 35+, and Women’s Open Bodybuilding Overall at the OCB Spirit of America, and then in May 2008, I entered (and placed 4th) in my first professional event at the IFPA Pro-Bowl in Richmond Virginia.

After the experience of my first professional contest, I set my sights on the Yorton Pro worlds. Last year, I volunteered at the same event as an expeditor with my friend and fellow competitor Kalvin Brooks to learn all I could about this international level event.  This year’s event was held Nov 13-14th, 2009 outside Washington DC and boasted over 75 professional level natural athletes from all over the world.  It was an honor to be included among the 16 pro women bodybuilders and I was overwhelmed when the judges awarded me with a 5th place medal.

5 weeks earlier, In October of 2009, I participated in the INBF Natural Atlantic Coast in High Point, NC. I was able to take away the women’s masters, lightweight and the overall title, earning me a place as a professional with the WNBF.

I was motivated to go into competitive bodybuilding only after I losing a very close friend to breast cancer. She inspired me to never give up

on a dream and to always take care of my health and myself. Before she became ill, it was her dream to become a physique competitor, but she was never able to realize that dream. She continues to provide me inspiration – always propelling me forward on this journey.

I love everything bodybuilding.  The discipline, the challenge, the networking with others but mostly the sense of accomplishment I feel to see such determination and hard work pay-off.  It is such a personal achievement, in so many aspects.  I have overcome tremendous obstacles; physically and mentally in ways I never believed possible.    I now believe that if you want something, nothing is unattainable. It is my plan for 2010 to share what I have learned by helping others get ready for the stage. I also plan to become a judge at natural events and begin to give back some to this sport that has enriched me in so many positive ways.
